Frequent Roofing Questions

  • How do I choose a roof repair company?

One of the frequent questions that we get asked is how do you choose a Roofing Repair Company? And my answer to that is, number one, do they specialize in roofing? To me? That's an important question that needs to be answered. Do they actually specialize in roofing? Number two, can they accurately describe to you the type of repairs that needs to be done to your personal roof? If they can't do that, that may be a red flag. So I think one, do they specialize in roofing, two have they seen this issue before? Number three, can they describe to you what it is that they need to do to your roof to repair?

  • What questions should I ask a roofer?

What should I ask a roofer? Well, we kind of addressed that before but one we should know whether or not this is a roofer do they actually specialize in roofing? Number two, ask them what they see as the issue. What do they need to do to repair the roof in a proper manner? Number three, are they going to warranty the repairs on the roof? Are they going to stand behind their repair of that roof? Those are some important questions that I think you need to ask your contract.

  • Do roofers give free estimates?

Do roofers give free estimates? All roofing estimates should be free. us as Friedman Home Improvements & Masonry always provide free estimates, no matter the situation.

  • What should a roofing estimate look like?

A roofing estimate, which should be free, should detail the work that needs to be done. It should give you a head to head description of what's being done to repair the roof - what kind of materials are being used - and you should consider if they are similar to what you currently have. If they're going to be different, they should explain why they are going to be different. Will those materials be better? Or, are they going to be subpar?

The goal when repairing a roof should be to use optimal products. They should list the products being used and the purpose. Check to see if they include the actual products that they're going to use In the repair of your roof.

  • How many roofing quotes should I get?

Well, that's totally up to you. Our recommendation is that you should go with the contractor that you feel most comfortable with. Find a contractor like us at Friedman Home Improvements, that's going to talk to you about it in a polite manner, describe to you the damage that you currently have on your roof,  and explain what needs to be done to fix it. And I think something that makes a big difference is giving an honest answer as to a timeline as to how long it's going to be before they can actually get out there and repair your roof. Because if you can't get it on his timeline, that may become a problem. If the roof is leaking, you don't want it to continue to be that way. At Friedman Home Improvements we come and tarp up the roof right away to protect your home from any further damages and then as soon as we can and we get a contract signed, then we come in right away and we repair your roof.

  • Will my insurance go up if I get a new roof?

No, that's definitely not true. If you get a new roof quite often your insurance can go down. You just have to provide proof that you've purchased a new roof.

  • Are roof repairs expensive?

Well, to be honest, part of the answer to that is the materials continue to go up for a number of reasons, as of late COVID has had a big impact on the cost of supplies. The materials are increasing day in and day out. It's also expensive because it's rather dangerous to crawl up on a roof and do these repairs. That's the honest answer to the situation. But you're also hiring someone for their expertise. Is it someone that just hopes that they can fix your roof? Or is it someone that really knows what they're doing and they specialize in doing those repairs. The cost should be relevant to the experience.

Dangers Your Roof Faces

  • Trees

After sizable thunderstorms or just as the consequence of gravity, trees and branches may fall onto your roof; if a tree falls onto your roof, it can break or penetrate the roof creating gaps and holes. To avoid this kind of damage, cut the branches that could easily damage your roof, and keep your landscaping a safe distance from the framework's boundary. You should also be aware of falling leaves, twigs, and pine needles. These materials can accumulate on top of the roof even if you have trimmed the branches back away from home and can cause unwanted moisture, which leads to corrosion or mold and mildew.

  • Hail

Hail is one of nature's most damaging forms of precipitation. Because it is tough to spot and see without a trained eye. Hail will often fall without a homeowner or property owner, even recognizing that it has fallen. Hailstorms can leave punctures in a roof if they strike hard enough and can even cause interior damage if it entirely penetrates the roof. Hailstorm damage can be easily missed if you do not actively look for signs of hail damage.  It is advised that you visually inspect your roof after every storm, and if you're unable to see your entire roof from the ground, we are happy to perform a free inspection.

  • Ponding

Ponding takes place when water pools on the top of a roof, capturing debris and algae. This water can cause damages to the structural integrity of a roofing system as well as also impact the roofing system's drainage. Ponding can lead to erosion of the roof and, ultimately, deterioration of the structure materials. If it is unaddressed for too long, it may also cause a roof to collapse.

  • Wind

Wind may be helpful for wind-surfing. However, it can affect the construction integrity of a roofing system. Strong gusts of wind can tear off or damage roof shingles, rubber, roofing tiles, metal, and other roofing materials. Intense wind storms can also bring hail with them. Wind damage can leave your roof unprotected and result in water leaking into ceilings and walls.

  • Ice

Ice can cause troubles not only for your roof but for people traveling beneath it. During the winter, snow can build up on the roof. The heat from the building or climate changes trigger the snow to melt, creating overflow. If cool enough, this water can make ice dams along the house's edges, causing blockages in the roofing system's water drainage. This ice accumulation can cause water to leak through a roof covering.

  • Moss

Moss can be the silent killer of your roof. Because it expands so slowly, moss might be an unsuspecting reason for roof leaks and damage. Moss feeds off of roofing tiles and roof shingles and retains water to survive. As it grows, it eats the layers of your roofing, and you may discover roof cracks or leaks. Moss and also algae build-up can also cause blockages to rain gutters and drainage paths. However, just because your roof has moss spots, it does not always need a new roof. But you need to take care of your roof and clean up locations with moss build up.

Different Types of Roofing Systems

Asphalt Composite Shingles

Asphalt composite shingles are the most well-known roof building material in North America. These three-tab shingles are a good option for most residence roofing requirements, being constructed from a fiberglass base covered with asphalt and mineral granules. They typically come with a 20- to 30-year manufacturer's warranty, and changing individual shingles that are broken is a relatively easy task. Practically every roofing business is familiar with setting up these singles. Composite shingles are good at flexing and adapting to a roof's movements due to expansion and shrinkage.

Wood Shingles or Shakes

Wood roofs are beautiful, but they are also costly and have limitations. They are not significantly long-lived, and they are a terrible option in locations that get considerable amounts of moisture or where wildfires are a threat. Still, they are among the most attractive of all roofing materials, making them a favored luxury house. If you're looking to have wood shingles installed, please give us a call, and we will happily perform an inspection and ensure your home is the right choice for wood shingles.

Clay Tile

Clay tile is made from earthen clays formed into rolled or interlocking designs and fired for hardness. It is often left unglazed, with the characteristic reddish-orange shade, or it can be polished and fired to form ceramic roofing tiles. Clay tile is an excellent roofing material for hot climates or where salt air exists, which is why these roofing systems are seen so frequently in southern coastal regions or desert areas. However, if you would like a clay roof installed here in Dayton, Ohio, we would be happy to inspect your roof and verify your structure can accommodate clay roofing tiles.

Concrete Tile

Concrete tile is an alternative to clay tile, with similar installation techniques and comparable benefits. Concrete tiles are built from ordinary sand-mix concrete colored to whatever shades are wanted. Several profiles are typically offered, several of which look like rolled clay tiles, others that are low-profile, resembling wood tiles. Concrete tile can be finished with a decorative coating when custom ordered. Concrete tile It is a remarkably heavy roofing material, making it a great choice in high-wind areas. Concrete tiles are not a typical installation for homes in Dayton, Ohio. However, it can be requested for houses with the structural capacity to handle its weight - providing a beautiful roofing system.

Synthetic Tile

Synthetic slate shingles are a remarkably convincing stand-in for natural slate, but this material is constructed from engineered polymers combined with recycled plastic and rubber. From the ground, it can be almost impossible to distinguish this engineered roofing from natural slate. Rubber roofing is a widespread roofing solution for homes in the Dayton, Ohio, area. We are experts in rubber roofing solutions and will gladly help you find the right roofing material for your roof.

Metal Shingle and Standing Beam

There are steel or aluminum shingles or shakes currently available for homeowners who do not like the style of standing seam metal roofing but desire the benefits of metal roofing. Made from stamped metal and finished with either a high-quality baked-on finish or mineral granules, metal shingles can be fabricated to look very much like traditional asphalt shingles, wooden shakes, and even slate or clay tiles. They are an outstanding option where appearance is a critical consideration.

The most common kind of metal roofing system is standing seam roofing, named because of the aluminum or steel roofing panels end in raised seams that interlock to help keep precipitation out. Metal roofs of all kinds are significantly more prevalent in regions with heavy snowfall or where there is a substantial risk of wildfires, given that this is entirely fire-resistant roofing material.

Metal roofs are incredibly long-lived and are fully recyclable when they ultimately do break. But setup requires special skills, and not every roofing company is prepared to install a standing seam metal roofing. Friedman Home Improvement is ready and able to accept all metal roofing requests and gladly give free quotes.

Membrane Roofing is a roof system that creates a continuous watertight covering to protect a building's interior. Membrane roofs are predominately used as flat roofing since they are waterproof, which is critical where water is not shed immediately. They can additionally be used on shallow angled roofs where shingled, slate or tiled roofing will not perform.

Description Title

Rolled roofing material is the mainstay of low-slope residential roofing systems and out-buildings like shops and sheds and other useful structures. Rolled roofing is composed of long rolls of mineral-infused and asphalt-filled fabric covered with mineral granules. Each roll is about 100 square feet of roofing and about 3 feet wide.

These large-format strips of thin roofing material offer a quick, convenient, and low-cost way to cover a sloped-roof building like a workshop where appearances aren't essential. Rolled roofing can be applied either with the torch-down method or with roofing nails.
